Raupen – Eulenfalter

Spodoptera exigua

We tested the hypothesis that induced defences benefit tomato plants by encouraging insects to eat other members of their species. We found that defences that promote cannibalism benefit tomatoes in two ways: cannibalism directly reduces herbivore abundance, and cannibals eat significantly less plant material.

Kleine Kohlfliege, Zwiebelfliege

Aromatische Kräuter als „Verwirrtaktik“:

Host-plant finding was affected by the size (weight, leaf area, height) of the surrounding non-host plants. ‘Companion plants’ and aromatic plants were no more disruptive to either species of fly than the other plants tested. Disruption by all plants resulted from their green leaves, and not from their odours and/or tastes.

Aromapflanzen:

Like other plants in the mustard family (Brassicaceae), the roots of oilseed radish exude chemicals that help suppress soil pests such as nematodes. These chemicals, called glucosinolates, discourage infestations of soil-borne diseases.

Plants in the Cruciferae family produce glucosinolates. These are secondary metabolites that have shown activity on insects, fungi and other pests. [..] Certain cultivars such as Adagio and Ultimo are reported to give better nematode suppression (especially cyst nematodes) than other cultivars. [..] Oilseed radish should be used to enhance current management strategies, not as the sole control measure.
[..] To improve weed and pest management, planting oilseed radish on the same field more than two years in a row is not recommended. Also avoid planting oilseed radish in rotation with cole crops such as cabbage, broccoli and radish because they may be susceptible to similar diseases and insects such as clubroot disease caused by the soil-borne fungus Plasmodiophora brassicae, cabbage root maggot (Delia radicum) and flea beetle (Phyllotreta species).

Increasing the spacing between lettuce rows, in both the winter and summer, increased fresh and dry mass and leaf number of the lettuce and decreased the productivities of the lettuce and rocket. Fresh and dry mass, leaf number and the productivities of lettuce and rocket were lower with intercropping than sole cropping in both the winter and summer. Sole cropping produced a higher percentage of lettuce plants with better commercial classification in both the winter and summer. Fresh and dry mass of the intercropped rocket were highest at lettuce row spacings of 0.28 and 0.40 m in both the winter and summer.

Winterkresse reduziert Befall mit Kohlschabe/Kohlmotte

[T]he diamond back moth (Plutella xylostella L.), a pest of Brassica crops, is highly attracted for oviposition to the G-type of yellow rocket (Barbarea vulagaris R. Br.), but the larvae are not able to survive on this host plant. This inability to survive has been attributed to a feeding deterrent, monodesmosidic triterpenoid saponin, and so larvae cannot complete development.

Trap crops afforded almost complete protection of cauliflower against Meligethes aeneus in southern Finland in 1983–85. The most attractive trap crop species were Chinese cabbage, calabrese and rape, but it was difficult to time their flowering accurately. A trap-crop area of 3–5 ha was used to protect 40–45 ha of cauliflowers, and crop losses due to the nitidulid were reduced from 20–40% in previous years to 3, 15 and 5% in the study years.

Mischung aus Beikulturen (Raps, Weißer Senf, Ölrettich) gegen Gewelltstreifigen Kohlerdfloh an Kohlpflanzen

The entire experiment was based on testing oilseed rape, white mustard and oil radish as potential trap crops to protect cabbage from cabbage flea beetles. A significant influence of the Brassica species on the feeding by the flea beetles was confirmed at both locations. [..] However, because none of the tested trap crops strongly attracted the flea beetles throughout the entire growing period of the crop, we recommend sowing mixtures of crops for cabbage production; thus, each of the three Brassica species would attract phytophagous insects during a particular part of the cabbage growing season.

  1. Intercropping had a significant effect on the decrease in the number of roots damaged by carrot rust fly Psila rosae. During harvest the least number of damaged roots were observed in combination with summer savory S. hortensis L.
  2. The number of carrot psyllid Trioza viridula Zett. and aphids on carrot leaves and roots damaged by nematodes was significantly lower on plots where carrot was intercropped.
  3. Intercropping both herbs positively influenced the number of beneficial insects. In all years the highest number of Coccinellidae and Syrphidae was observed on plots where carrot was intercropped with coriander.
